W. Michael Walsh, M.D.
Dr. Walsh completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship in 1976 at the Hughston Orthopaedic Clinic in Columbus, Georgia. The Hughston Clinic is home not only to one of the first Sports Medicine Fellowships ever established, but also to the first fully dedicated Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Hospital in the nation. In 1980, Dr. Walsh came to Omaha to start the Sports Medicine Program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He directed that program until 1990 when he became one of the original partners in the Sports Medicine Center. The partners in that practice ultimately became the nucleus of the current group, OrthoWest, P.C. Dr. Walsh has also been team orthopaedic surgeon for all of the teams at the University of Nebraska-Omaha since 1980.
Dr. Walsh has been board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery since 1977. An active member of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, he has served on numerous committees and was the author of "Prevention and Treatment of Little League Baseball and Softball Injuries," a national safety course developed for Little League Baseball, Inc., by the Society. Dr. Walsh has also been a member of the International Knee Society and editorial board member for the American Journal of Sports Medicine, the nation's leading sports medicine journal.
